Welfare facilities for the industry


Workplace health and safety regulations specify the regulations for welfare facilities that must be provided for the staff to use on construction sites. Employers must provide welfare units and portable toilets that are:

  • equipped with all sanitation conveniences (hand soap, paper towels, toilet paper)
  • clean and maintained, regularly checked for safety
  • in adequate numbers considering numbers of staff
  • separate for male and female use whenever possible to do so.

Changing rooms and lockers for private possessions 

Whenever your staff are required to change into specialist uniforms, separate male and female changing rooms must be available (with lockable doors). Appropriate seating must be provided within each unit. Lockable lockers should be available for storage of personal items. Also, drying facilities for work clothing should be found on site.

Drinking water

As an employer, you are obliged to supply fresh drinking water with cups for your staff. Usually water bowser hire comes with non-potable water supplies - however it is advised to consult with your supplier, as most of them do offer fresh drinking water supply deliveries on demand. Water bowsers with potable water supplies should be allocated in places with minimal risk of contamination. Also, the water bowsers are typically accompanied with a safe locking system to avoid the situation with water supply is tempered with.

Rest welfare units

Requirements for welfare units designated as rest area:

  • proper heating
  • seating area, benches and tables - numbers suitable for the number of staff
  • small kitchenette and food heating facility (a microwave)
  • fresh water supply
  • adequate ventilation
  • clean area for food consumption
  • both hot and cold running water - while portable toilets can do with just cold fresh water, the rest welfare facilities should have hot water running and allow for hand washing for up to elbow length
  • disabled toilets do not have to be provided on construction sites
